OVERACTIVE BLADDER (OAB) TREATMENT IN NAIROBI

12 Mar, 2024 11:23 AM

Are suffering from sudden and uncontrolled need or urge to go urinate, making you vulnerable to leaking urine when you feel the urge to pee? Do you experience frequent urination during the day and or night? If your answer to these conditions is yes, then these are symptoms of Overactive Bladder (OAB), a group of urinary symptoms as it is not a disease.

How is overactive bladder treated?
Dr Onyango Oluoch – Urologist, offers a number of treatment options to manage overactive bladder, including Bladder Reconstruction or Urinary Diversion Surgery, this type of surgery is used in very rare and serious cases. There are two types of bladder surgeries, namely augmentation cystoplasty, where the bladder is enlarged and urinary diversion surgery, where the urine is rerouted.

Nerve stimulation also called neuromodulation therapy; is also another treatment solution for people who need extra help. This treatment involves sending electrical pulses to the nerves which share the same path for the bladder so that the bladder can be able to function properly.

Symptoms of Overactive Bladder
Overactive bladder symptoms include the need or urge to urinate that is difficult to control, the involuntary leak of urine immediately followed by the urgent need to urinate, frequent urinating and awakening two or more times in the night to urinate.

Overactive Bladder can be problematic
Overactive bladder may get in the way of your work, social life, school life, and exercise and sleep as you will always have the need or urge to urinate. Left untreated, overactive bladder symptoms may make it difficult to get through the day without making many trips to the bathroom.

Dr Onyango Oluoch - Urologist - URINARY INCONTINENCE TREATMENT IN KENYA

URINARY INCONTINENCE TREATMENT IN KENYA

11 Mar, 2024 9:17 PM

URINARY INCONTINENCE (UI) negatively affects one’s ability to control their bladder, causing embarrassment and impacts negatively on both their professional and social well being. If coughing, laughing, sneezing and physical activity cause you to leak urine, you may be suffering from Urinary or Stress Incontinence. This type of bladder problem is common and is often related to physical changes resulting from childbirth, age in men, pregnancy, and menopause in women.

The first step towards relief from bladder problems is to have an assessment. Dr Oluoch Onyango – Urologist, and his team are dedicated to giving you the most advanced and up-to-date treatment options available. Prior to any procedure, all patients are examined to ensure there are no underlying medical problems. We understand the impact urinary incontinence can have on an individual. For this reason, we offer a range of medical solutions that can resolve UI effectively, including surgery and medication.

Types of urinary incontinence we treat include:
• Stress incontinence. Urine leaks when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or lifting something heavy.
• Urge incontinence. You have a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary loss of urine. You may need to urinate often, including throughout the night. Urge incontinence may be caused by a minor condition, such as infection, or a more severe condition such as a neurological disorder or diabetes.
• Overflow incontinence. You experience frequent or constant dribbling of urine due to a bladder that doesn't empty completely.
• Functional incontinence. A physical or mental impairment keeps you from making it to the toilet in time. For example, if you have severe arthritis, you may not be able to unbutton your pants quickly enough.
• Mixed incontinence. You experience more than one type of urinary incontinence — most often this refers to a combination of stress incontinence and urge incontinence.

Feel comfortable to discuss incontinence with Dr Onyango Oluoch – Urologist, as it may:
• Cause you to restrict your activities and limit your social interactions
• Negatively impact your quality of life
• Increase the risk of falls in older adults as they rush to the toilet
• Indicate a more serious underlying condition

Dr Onyango Oluoch - Urologist - PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT SPECIALIST IN NAIROBI

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT SPECIALIST IN NAIROBI

21 Jul, 2023 6:53 PM

PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT depends on how far it has progressed and the patient’s age. PROSTATE CANCER can be treated through SURGERY, RADIATION, HORMONE THERAPY, and CHEMOTHERAPY. Often, a combination of these treatments is used. Prostate Cancer will affect one in 6 men in their lifetime. The good news is that when detected early, Prostate Cancer survival rate approaches 100%.

Who is more likely to be affected by PROSTATE CANCER?
Age – Prostate Cancer is rare in men under 50. Older men are at an increased risk and it’s thought that most men will develop prostate cancer if they live into the old age;
Race – African men are more prone to prostate cancer;
Family History – Having a close relative with prostate cancer increases your chances of developing the disease.

However, many men develop PROSTATE CANCER even without the presence of these risk factors.

Dr Onyango Oluoch – a leading UROLOGIST based at 5th Avenue Medical & Day Surgery Centre in Nairobi, Kenya - is renowned for his expertise and many years of experience in the Diagnosis and Treatment of PROSTATE CANCER. He advises that symptoms of the disease in men include reduced urine flow, a more frequent need to urinate or pain during urination. Such symptoms are very frequently caused by a benign enlargement of the prostate.

Symptoms of PROSTATE CANCER
Most men will not experience any symptoms, especially in the early stages. However, when symptoms occur, they may include:
• Frequent urination, especially at night
• Weak or interrupted urine flow
• Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
• Painful or burning urination
• Painful ejaculation
• Blood in urine or semen
• Difficulty having an erection

Dr Onyango Oluoch emphasizes the need for regular check-ups for men aged 50 and above. As a specialist, he carries extensive examination that involves a blood test to measure the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and a rectal examination of the prostate. If the examination reveals signs of prostate cancer (heightened PSA and enlarged prostate), it can be diagnosed with a prostate biopsy. If the tissue examination (biopsy) confirms the cancer diagnosis, then he performs further examinations such as a computed tomography (CT) scan.

TREATMENT OF PROSTATE CANCER
The treatment of PROSTATE CANCER varies from person to person and depends on the size of the tumour, the stage of the cancer and patient’s age. Treatments for localized PROSTATE CANCER (with low risk of evolution) - at stages 1 and 2 can be done using a variety of methods, depending on the characteristics of the disease and the patient’s preferences.

THE TREATMENT OPTIONS
With a high survival rate, maintaining the quality of life after recovery is a major concern for Dr Onyango Oluoch in treating PROSTATE CANCER. Fortunately, there’s a minimally-invasive alternative – High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). HIFU does not negatively affect continence or sexual function and offers comparable and even slightly higher success rates.

Not every man diagnosed with PROSTATE CANCER is a candidate for HIFU treatment. Factors affecting eligibility include:
• Stage of diagnosis
• Other treatments you may have had
• Your overall health condition

Dr Onyango Oluoch - Urologist - KIDNEY STONES SPECIALIST IN NAIROBI

KIDNEY STONES SPECIALIST IN NAIROBI

21 Jul, 2023 6:08 PM

KIDNEY STONES – Dr Onyango Oluoch – Urologist - 0741254745 - Is KIDNEY STONES SPECIALIST in Nairobi, Kenya.

The kidneys are responsible for removing waste from the blood. These waste products are then combined, making urine, so urine naturally contains many dissolved minerals and salts. If there isn't enough fluid to form urine, these minerals and salts can clump together and form kidney stones, otherwise known as renal calculi, Nephrolithiasis, or Urolithiasis.

Kidney Stones are small hard deposits that are found in the kidney or along the ureter (the narrow tube that transports urine from the kidney to the bladder). They can cause pain, infection, blockage or damage to the kidney if left untreated.

How are kidney stones treated?
Dr Onyango Oluoch reiterates that treatment of kidney stones will depend on the size of the stone and whether or not it is causing urinary obstruction. As an urologist, he will be able to assess you and do the necessary tests to diagnose your condition. Once diagnosed, he will be able to determine the most suitable treatment option for your specific case.

Dr Onyango Oluoch emphasizes that the treatment of choice also depends on the symptoms, patient and stone characteristics (size, location, density, and composition) as well as patient preference.

What symptoms can be expected with kidney stones?
Symptoms of a problematic kidney stone or urinary obstruction may include pain in the lower abdomen or groin, blood in the urine, persistent urge to urinate, passing little to no urine, foul-smelling urine, pain when urinating, fever, nausea and vomiting.

Kidney stones can become so problematic if lodged in the ureter (the tube between the kidney and the bladder). This urinary obstruction then blocks the flow of urine from the kidney and can cause serious damage to the kidneys whose treatment may require surgeries.

Book an appointment with us for an elaborate Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment and Management of your Kidney Stone complications today!
