TREATMENT OF URINARY TRACT INFECTION IN NAIROBI

A URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI), or bladder infection - is an infection in any part of the urinary system: the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra; the most common infections occurring in the bladder and the urethra. The infection is caused by bacteria…mostly E.coli bacterium that can affect any part of the urinary system, but is most common in the lower urinary tract.
A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection in the urinary system. When the infection affects:
• the urethra, it is called urethritis
• the kidneys, it is called pyelonephritis
• the bladder, it s called cystitis
Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection
UTI symptoms can range from barely noticeable to severe and include:
• A strong urge to urinate that doesn’t go away
• Urinating often, and passing small amounts of urine
• Pain in the side (flank), abdomen or pelvic area
• Pressure in the lower pelvis
• Abnormal urine colour: urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-coloured
• Incontinence (urine leakage)
• A burning feeling when urinating or painful urination (dysuria)
• Strong or foul-smelling urine
• Pelvic pain, in women — in the pelvis and around the area of the pubic bone
• Pain during sex
• Penis pain
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Vomiting
• Feeling tired, shaky, confused, or weak (more common in older women)
A person with a kidney infection (pyelonephritis) can also experience:
• Fever and/or chills
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Loin (lower abdominal) pain
• Back pain
How we diagnize UTI

• Cystoscopy
• Imaging: Ultrasound/ CT scan or MRI
