A lot of people ask, is fluoride application helpful in preventing tooth decay?
Well, fluoride application has played an essential role in oral health treatment for decades. Fluoride supports healthy tooth enamel and fights the bacteria that harm teeth and gums; and equally helpful to those at high risk of developing dental caries, or cavities. When chemically incorporated in the teeth, fluoride hardens the enamel, making it resistant to demineralization, which is the leading cause of tooth decay and cavities.

At Dove Dental Clinic, based in Thika town, we offer generally safe complete Fluoride treatments. We are sensitive to extremely rare cases where a patient has an allergic reaction to the fluoride. Fluoride toothpaste being is very effective in preventing tooth decay, we offer professional advice to our patients on the amount of fluoride in toothpaste ie 1350ppm to 1500ppm in children, that is usually enough to reduce decay. But when children ages 8 and under are exposed to too much fluoride, they can develop what is known as dental fluorosis, which causes white speckling or pitting on tooth surfaces.

Is fluoride recommended for adults?
Fluoride, in both toothpaste and drinking water, is beneficial to People of all ages. However, the amount of fluoride a person uses should be tailored to factors including age, stage of growth and development and risk for dental decay. Scientific evidence indicates that optimum levels of fluoride in drinking water can reduce cavities by 30 percent. Not only can fluoride strengthen teeth to prevent future decay, it can also help to arrest early decay, thus preventing the need to fill a tooth. Adults do benefit from fluoride because as they age, their teeth weaken, making them more susceptible to decay.

What is fluoride found in?
Fluoride tends to accumulate in a mixture of both healthy and unhealthy foods including tea, coffee, shellfish, grapes (raisins, wine, grape juice), artificial sweeteners, sodas, potatoes, baby foods, stews, and hot cereals made with tap water.
