What Is BPH?
ENLARGED PROSTATE, also known as BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous condition where the prostate gland enlarges with age, potentially pressing on the urethra and causing urinary issues.
Common Symptoms

• Urgency: A sudden, strong need to urinate
• Difficulty Starting or Stopping Urine Flow: Hesitation or weak stream.
• Incomplete Bladder Emptying: Feeling that the bladder isn’t fully emptied.
Causes and Diagnosis
BPH is mainly linked to aging and hormonal changes. Diagnosis typically involves:
• A review of symptoms and medical history.
• A physical exam, including a digital rectal exam (DRE).
• Urine and blood tests (such as the PSA test).
Treatment Options
1. Watchful Waiting: Lifestyle changes (e.g., reducing caffeine/alcohol, limiting fluid intake before bedtime) for mild symptoms
2. Medications:
• Alpha Blockers relaxes prostate muscles.
• 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors gradually shrink the prostate.
3. Procedures/Surgery: For severe cases, treatments like TURP may be recommended.
