At Nairobi Skin Centre, we offer treatment for Keloid scars, the abnormal overgrowth resulting from wound healing usually caused by damage of the skin, such as by a surgery cut, a piercing, a burn, chickenpox, or acne. Keloids tend to have genetic component and is more likely to affect people with darkened skin pigment. For this reason you may want to avoid having tattoos, unnecessary surgeries and body piercing in black pigmented people to reduce known risk factors for developing keloids.

We medically treat Keloids through various procedures such as surgical removal (Keloid surgery), pressure earring, garment or dressing, laser treatment to reduce the height and fade the colour of a Keloid, silicone sheets and gels to flatten a Keloid and prevent Keloids from returning.

Cryotherapy is another form of treatment that we offer. This medical procedure freezes the Keloid from the inside out while saving the skin beneath the Keloid, hence reduces the hardness and size of a Keloid. Cryotherapy works best on small Keloids. We also do radiation therapy after the surgical removal of Keloids to prevent it from returning.

Dr Hannah Wanyika, the Dermatologist, also specializes in ligature - a procedure that involves use of a surgical thread tied around the Keloid to gradually cut into the Keloid, causing it to fall off. We recommend that Keloid patients should follow their dermatologist's instructions to help them reduce the chance of a Keloid returning. It will also help them get the best results from treatment.
