Tool Steel Suppliers in Kenya
07 Feb, 2018 5:05 PM
Kens Metal Industries Ltd are the leading manufacturers and suppliers of Stainless Steel tool steels in Kenya. Tool steel, coming in rods and flats, are popular for their distinctive hardness, their ability to hold a cutting edge at elevated temperatures and their resistance to abrasion and deformation. They are hence suitable for use in the shaping of other materials as may be desired.
Tool Steel is used for cutting, pressing, extruding, and coining of metals and other materials. Its hardness, resistance to abrasion and ability to retain shape at increased temperatures are the key properties of this material. Kens Metal Industries Ltd carries a wide variety of tool steel grades, shapes and sizes such as cold tool steel, hot tool steel and Plastic mould tool steel, coming in rods and flats shapes.
The determination of a choice from the grades will depend on;
- The cost effectiveness
- Working temperature,
- Required surface hardness
- Shock resistance
- Toughness requirement
Tool Steel Grades
1, Cold Work Tool Steel – D2 (Rods/Flats)
Popularly referred to as D2, cold work steel offers an excellent combination of wear resistance, high hardness and fairly good toughness. This makes it extremely stable in hardening and is capable of being nitrated.
D2 is therefore suitable for production of larger parts and parts that have minimum distortion requirement on being hardened. They are ideal in
applications such as fine blanking tools, heavier duty press tools, punches and dies shear blades, granulating knives, slitting cutters, clipping tools thread rolling dies, moulds for abrasive compounds, forming rolls, deep drawing tools, cold extrusion tools and spinning tools.
2. Hot Work Tool Steel – H10/H13 (Rods/Flats)
H13 is versatile hot work tools steel giving fairly good hot toughness and wear resistance. It has good thermal shock resistance and will tolerate a degree of water cooling in service. H13 may be nitrated but care should be taken not to impart too great a depth of hardness as shock resisting capacity will be reduced.
H13 is suitable for many hot work applications such as pressure die-casting tools, extrusion tools, forging dies, hot shear blades and stamping die. This group of tool steel was specifically developed to maintain strength and hardness while exposed to prolonged elevated temperatures.
3. Plastic Mould Tool Steel or Special Purpose Steel - P20 (Rods/Flats)
Known as 2311, it is hardened and tempered mould steel. It takes a good polish and is suitable for texturing and may be nitrated to increase surface hardness. 2311 is suitable for plastic mould tools where further heat treatment and consequent risk of distortion is to be avoided. It is also suitable for pressure die casting tools. If a higher hardness is required, the tools should first be annealed. Plastic Mould Steel is designed to meet the needs of zinc die casting and the special requirements of plastic injection moulding dies.
