OSTEOARTHRITIS TREATMENT IN KENYA
OSTEOARTHRITIS (OA), also known as Degenerative Joint Disease, is a joint disease that affects primarily the KNEES, HIPS, SHOULDERS, FINGERS and FEET, resulting in strong joint pain with accompanying impairment or difficulties in everyday movements and inflammation of the joint. The forms of Osteoarthritis include Finger Osteoarthritis, Elbow Osteoarthritis, Hip Osteoarthritis, Shoulder Osteoarthritis, Knee Osteoarthritis, Feet Osteoarthritis
One characteristic of osteoarthritis is start-up pain: This means that the pain is particularly strong after a rest phase (e.g. sitting or lying) and decreases with increasing movement. In the final stage the pain is permanent and joint mobility can be severely restricted.
Signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
• Pain. Affected joints might hurt during or after movement
• Stiffness. Joint stiffness might be most noticeable upon awakening or after being inactive
• Tenderness. Your joint might feel tender when you apply light pressure to or near it
• Loss of Flexibility. You might not be able to move your joint through its full range of motion
• Grating sensation. You might feel a grating sensation when you use the joint, and you might hear popping or crackling
• Bone Spurs. These extra bits of bone, which feel like hard lumps, can form around the affected joint
• Swelling. This might be caused by soft tissue inflammation around the joint
Dr. Paul Etau Ekwom – Rheumatologist, has extensive experience and expertise in joint and sport disease diagnosis, treatment and management, including sport surgery in every age group, with outstanding specialization in the area of osteoarthritis. Since Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that worsens over time, often resulting in chronic pain, he advises that people with symptoms outlined above should consult a specialist early before joint pain and stiffness become severe enough to make daily tasks difficult. The earlier you act, the better the chances for a life and movement as pain-free as possible.
Dr Paul Etau Ekwom offers Osteoathritis treatment options at the highest level due to many years of experience in the the treatment of sports injuries and their consequential damage to shoulders , elbows , hips and knees. He always professionally performs comprehensive clinical examination of the affected joint to assess and localise the pain, movement restrictions, anatomical differences and muscle strength in order to provide rapid, expert investigation and consultation as well as treatment without delay.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system, which normally functions to protect us against infections, mistakenly attacks the lining of the joints such as small joints of the hand and feet, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees and ankles. It is an inflammatory disease that can affect multiple joints in the body causing pain, stiffness and swelling. The inflammation can affect other organs, such as the nerves, eyes, skin, lungs or heart.
Early Signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis
You should see your doctor if you experience one or more of the following symptoms consistently for more than five (5) weeks:
• Pain or stiffness of multiple joints
• Semi-Liquid Substance (Gelling) or stiffness of joints, more so in the morning, that lasts an hour or more
• Warmth or redness over joints
• Reduced ability to move the joints (e.g. difficulty making a fist, twisting objects, opening objects, climbing stairs)
• Fever, fatigue, weight loss or decreased appetite
• Lumpy growths that form under your skin, most commonly on the elbows, hands or feet
DR. PAUL ETAU EKWOM – Rheumatologist - is a specialist in the treatment and management of Rheumatoid Arthritis in Kenya. He advises anyone with the symptoms listed above to visit their physicians or nearby hospital for diagnosis and treatment
He also explains that the symptoms of RA vary widely from person to person. Most importantly, he explains, because RA starts in a few joints then spreads to other joints over a few weeks to months, and the disease also progresses extremely quickly. If untreated, RA can permanently damage the joint. Once a joint is damaged, it cannot be fixed other than through surgery.
The earliest symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can be non-specific, including feeling unwell or tired, soreness around joints and muscles, low-grade fever, and weight loss/poor appetite. As time goes on, RA can involve more and more joints on both sides of the body, often in a “symmetrical” pattern.
Dr Paul Etau Ekwom offers extensive care in the treatment and management of Rheumatoid Arthritis. With many years of experience in the medical field, he offers some of the best care in rheumatologic diseases and conditions. He offers specialized care and treatment of Arthritis and has various treatment plans that are tailored to the individual's needs, aimed at a sustained highly effective recovery of patient.
