Serena Beach Hotel & Spa
Shanzu Beach, Mombasa, Kenya
Bliss
When entering the Serena Mombasa you may get the feeling that you have stepped into a time machine and gone back centuries. The Swahili style architecture, sprawling gardens and eco-friendly feel makes this hotel one of my favourite destination on the Kenyan coast. Service is impeccable. The Serena team will get you checked in within minutes and although the rooms are smaller than the average beach hotel they perfectly fit the style. The pool is brilliant blue and always clean, but the best part is the pool bar, which allows you the luxury of staying in the pool while sipping on a beverage of your choice. Being situated on their own private beach you will not be bothered by numerous beach boys that roam the more public beaches, and this particular inlet has a perfect breeze that will keep you cool even in the hottest of weather. The food is to die for and compounded with efficient and friendly service, I would recommend this hotel to all travelers. -

Tamarind Dhow
Nyali Beach, Mombasa, Kenya
Sea Food On The Ocean
When you are at the coast, sipping fresh coconuts, lying under the sun, swimming in the ocean, you must try the Tamarind Dhow. This quaint evening ride begins at sunset and takes you out for a few hours. They serve you with a welcome drink and escort you to your seat. Then are served with snacks which include cassava. The menu comes around when you have left the dock and you pick what you would like to eat. The seafood salad, for starters, was delightful. The dhow docks in order for you to eat. On the way to the docking point, you pass under the Nyali bridge where you are treated to a crew member performing acrobats on the mast of the Dhow. Dessert comes around and this is the best cheese cake i have had. The great thing about the dhow is that they have different specials for different days. Depending on the day you go, you receive a choice of the days special (for soups and desserts). The Dhow can be a romantic getaway for two or a family event. The dance floor is open for when you finish your meal and is pleasantly accompanied by the amazing band upon the dhow. When you return to the tamarind dock, you are left with a keep sack which will always remind you of the wonderful time you had on the Tamarind Dhow. -

Subzone
Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya
Timing is everything!
SubZone - a sandwich, salad and wrap restaurant. Located in a corner on the first floor, SubZone had an instant appeal to everyone who has heard of or eaten at SubWay and for those of us who proclaim to be eating healthy. You need to time your visit carefully. There have been evening when i have been there to find no bread… Sandwich with no bread - sounds interesting doesn't it. However, there are other times: if you go at lunch time or an hour after - that you will receive bread. Sandwich in bread - sounds much better. I have never eaten there as i always get my sub to go. This has been disastrous on 3 out of 4 occasions. The Subs are not packed correctly. They are either put into the brown paper bag upside down and all the contents are at the bottom of the bag when you want to eat. Another issue is that the Subs are not wrapped in enough paper and all the sauces seep through the bottom and eventually though the brown paper bag. This happens in a time span of less than 15 minutes. So by the time you get home - if the brown paper bag was on your lap - your pants are ruined. Even though SubZone has really tasty sandwiches, the inconsistency of the of the servers bothers me. At times a server is lazy and tends to grill the cheese and meat at the same time. Other times a server doesn't put enough of an ingredient. On the random chance that you get there when they have bread and you receive a good server who packs your Subs correctly, SubZone is the place to be. But time it well. -

Travellers Beach Hotel & Club
Mombasa North Coast, Mombasa, Kenya
Travellers Paradise
The Travellers Beach Hotel located in North Coast Mombasa is a splendid environment for a family vacation. The location of the hotel provides a variety of fun activities for the whole family. For those interested in the wonders on stone town, Mombasa town is just across the bridge. I enjoyed relaxing by the pool, long walks on the beach and enjoying the sun and sea. Beach front access for when the tide is high or morning walks on the beach or even just relaxing in a sun bed. When the tide is out the pool offers a relaxing retreat. Enjoy milkshakes and burgers by the pool side but remember to allow the allotted time before swimming. There are great sun beds which are facing the sea but covered by the shade of palm trees. This to me was the most enjoyable spot of the hotel, and offers an ideal spot to watch the sunrise. I enjoyed the large rooms which come with a sitting area and also a balcony overlooking palm trees and the ocean. The buffet tables however, did not meet my expectations. -

Uchumi Supermarkets
Find It Here!!!!
Uchumi Supermarket in Sarit Centre has been a source of great value for money. Nothing can compare to the variety and range of products that you receive at this branch. The deli offer great quality cold cuts which can be used in a variety of meals. The only downside of this branch is the long check out queues. The queues, more often than not, deter one from shopping there. However, if you have the time and patience to peruse through their aisles, you are likely to come across some great deals. The service varies depending on who you talk to. For example, the Deli service is great in comparison to the aisle service, as some of the helpers are not aware of the products that they stock. However, once you get used to this branch it will be difficult to shop anywhere else. -

Dormans Ltd
Food Vs Service
On an average weekday i would recommend this location to anyone who wants to relax with the a nice hot coffee, iced beverage or even a scrumptious pie. Dormans has, without a doubt, some of the best made pastries, sandwiches and coffee. The only downside about this location occurs on weekends or public holidays. You can find yourself waiting for 20 minutes just to receive a menu and another 30 minutes for your order to be taken. At times like that you must consider if the coffee is actually worth the wait.
